Joel Lane is the author of three full-length poetry collections, The Edge of the Screen, Trouble in the Heartlands and The Autumn Myth (all from Arc). His other work includes two novels, a novella, a booklet of crime stories and three collections of ghost stories. He lives in Birmingham, where he works as a journalist.Instinct is a selection of erotic poems written over 25 years.

From the very first lines, longing haunts these pages. In Joel Lane's poems blinds come down, shutters close, and with each one a new window opens on one's own world. This is where the poems of the hidden city turn to poems of the city that we hide and that we hide from. Whatever it is that you have longed for yourself, Instinct makes the feelings you thought you had under control stir again... and it leaves you longing for more.     Dave Reeves

These poems explore the sensuality and suffering of complex attachments. The landscape of the city represents the same dynamic, invigorating and deathly, at times silent, at times brutal. Within all of the poems is a desire to reconcile these tensions within the bounds of language and to accommodate the limits of contemporary life with the human instinct for love.     Eleanor Rees
